Although we didn’t get our way by fiat as planned, we gradually got it anyway. First, Mrs. Bitter stopped coming to the meetings after a confrontation with me in one meeting. Then Dr. Bitter was diplomatically informed that it might be better if he didn’t attend meetings of the Steering committee, which he was anxious to be involved with. At one point, later on, Dr. Bitter confided that Mrs. Bitter felt so unwelcome in the house that she hadn’t passed through the lobby in six months.

After 28 years of service to the Graduate House, Dr. Ashdown reached the age of mandatory retirement and had to relinquish his role as housemaster. In his honor, the Graduate House was renamed as Ashdown House on Alumni Day, June 14, 1965. Ashdown House celebrated its 50th anniversary with a series of colloquia and a potluck dinner, cooked by Ashdown residents. Ashdown House features a mix of apartment and suite-style units for one, two, or three occupants. Many of the units are gender neutral, but same-sex units are available upon request. Concerned about continuing outbreaks of the plague in London, William aspired to build Elizabeth a small palace in the countryside.

Breakfast and dinner customers were mainly Ashdown residents, but the lunch became a popular focus for other students, faculty and staff, mostly from the Mass. A physics graduate student and Ashdown resident came to me as a Physics professor who enjoyed meals there, to ask for support for the Ashdown students’ opposition to the Administration plan. I met with Administration officials to find out what the problem was and learned that the dining service was indeed a financial drain.
It first became co-educational in 1975.[4] The last headmaster, from September 2019 to June 2020, was Hilary Phillips, previously of the prep school of Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls. Ashdown House was given its name by John Trayton Fuller upon his purchase of the site, by Act of Parliament, for £10,000 in 1793. The land had previously comprised the Manor of Lavertye, first recorded in 1285. In 1597, it was part of the Buckhurst estate, a house of brick and Horsham stone with "... several courtyards, gardens, orchards, closes, rooms, two old dwelling houses, and a great barn."

Aware of her love of hunting, he chose Ashdown as the site for her hunting lodge but Elizabeth died before the house was completed. After the Restoration, Elizabeth and William returned to England, where she lived in his home in London’s Drury Lane until her death in 1662. William acted as the informal head of her household, escorted her to the theatre, and spent much of his time in her company. William first met Elizabeth when he was a young soldier in The Hague. When Frederick died in 1632, Elizabeth was left destitute and William provided her with financial support. More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether.
“The events that come to mind seem mainly to revolve around food, but behind that lies the substance that really represents the quality of life of the House. Somehow, it was a period of remarkably good and open relationships and a growing sense of community among the students living there. Our history began in 1972 when the MIT administration announced that it was considering closing the Ashdown dining room because it was losing money. At that time there was a big kitchen behind the east wall of what is now called the ‘Hulsizer’ room and also storage and work space in the basement underneath it.

The Cherry Pie Society was also founded during Dr. Ashdown's tenure. The Society was so aptly named since the meetings would consist of a discussion of a non-technical topic of general interest over dinner followed by Doc’s favorite dessert, cherry pie. “When we started, in the fall of 1974, we followed the examples of our predecessors and invited 60 students at a time, every two weeks, for dinner in our apartment. After two semesters of doing that and getting to know the house better, we did some simple arithmetic and realized that with 450 residents, our dinners were offering each student two social events a year. In 1937, MIT acquired the Riverbank Court Hotel at 305 Memorial Drive. A leading proponent of the purchase, Dr. Ashdown supervised its renovation into a dormitory.
